Fourteen years. That’s how long I endured PayPal’s relentless incompetence and indifference. From the outset, they treated me more like a nuisance than a valued customer. But it wasn’t until I found myself in Mexico that their true colors became glaringly apparent.
Despite notifying them of my travels and ensuring all necessary precautions were taken, PayPal repeatedly blocked my debit card. Every month or so, like clockwork, they’d shut it off. I’d have to call, explain the situation, and wait for them to “resolve” the issue, only for it to happen again. It was a never-ending cycle of frustration.
But the most harrowing experience came during a life-threatening ordeal. After my family narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt by a Mexican drug cartel, we were separated during our escape across the Rio Grande. I was immediately released because I am an American citizen, but my wife and daughter were detained and sent to an immigration facility 50 miles away. I walked 47 of those miles in 24 hours to reunite with them, only to discover they had been deported back to the very place we fled.
Alone, penniless, and having been robbed earlier by corrupt police in Mexico, a friend in the U.S. sent me nearly $2,000 via PayPal to help. But because I had recently updated my phone number, PayPal locked me out of being able to do anything with the money for several days due to their “security measures.” I was homeless in the United States, sleeping outdoors, with thousands of dollars inaccessible because of their “security measures” designed to “protect PayPal users,” etc.
PayPal has never provided any proof that any of their inconvenient and annoying security measures have ever protected my assets.
My story isn’t unique. Thousands have voiced similar grievances. ConsumerAffairs lists over 4,400 one-star reviews for PayPal, highlighting issues like funds being held without reason and exorbitant fees. The Better Business Bureau has logged numerous complaints, with users expressing frustration over unexplained account freezes and poor customer service. Even public figures like Belle Delphine have faced PayPal’s arbitrary actions, with her $90,000 earnings from a viral product being withheld for years.
My PayPal-alternative is Chime, in terms of a financial institution that makes it easy to open up an account, and that has great features, and excellent customer service. I want to strongly encourage my readers to open a Chime account, instead of dealing with PayPal’s corporate insanity. Yes, I receive a referral bonus if you join, but more importantly, so do you!
If you want $100 then open up a Chime account right now.
Before you open up your Chime account with my referral link, I want you to know that if Chime ever falters, I’ll be the first to call them out. But for now, they’ve been a beacon of reliability in a sea of financial chaos.
